My sister Cyndi was married in June of 2003. It never
occurred to her at the time to doubt her future husband's word when he said he'd
been tested for different diseases and was free and clear. While on her
honeymoon, my brother went to get something out of our now brother-in-law's car
and found a bag of pills. None of us recognized the medication and decided to
look them up in case these were something that he needed. These medications were
heavy duty AIDS pills used in cocktails to help keep the disease from spreading.
We informed my sister of this as soon as possible and her husband denied having
AIDS. They went and got tested and yes he came back positive. In fact he'd been
positive since 1994. In Florida what he did is considered a crime for he was
obligated to inform her of this before they had sex however that does not change
the fact that every six months for the next two years my sister has to be tested
and that her life has been thrown into chaos not to mention the rest of the
family and our turmoil. I want to add here that as of December 2008, my sister is
still negative and her ex-husband did his 2 years in prison and is still on
probation.
All of this could have been prevented. If Florida required blood testing before
marriage which included such things as HIV, Hepatitis, Herpes and other
dangerous diseases. If they had been tested and informed of each others results
then my sister would not have been at risk. A simple test that the health
department does for free.
I want to state though that I am not against people with
HIV, Hepatitis, etc. I have had many friends with these diseases and others.
What I'm against are the few people who don't bother to inform their partner
that they are infected.
If you live in Florida below are links to write to
different political groups to encourage this to happen. I also encourage anyone
before you get married get blood testing, even if it is not required by your
state. Once you are tested make sure to see a copy of the report. Yes you should
be able to trust your future spouse unfortunately there are some who count on
you trusting them and not checking.
