Your Rights as a Patient
- You have the right to ask questions, to be
informed in all aspects of your care, and to be treated with respect.
- You have the right to know what medications you
are being given, what they are for and what side effects they can cause.
- You have the right to ask about any tests or
procedures that are being done.
- You have the right to view your medical chart.
- You have the right to refuse any medication,
treatment or test if you so choose.
- You have the right to privacy, this includes not
only for your person but also your medical information.
- You have the right to good hygiene. If you
are not allowed/able to take a shower then you should have access to a bed
bath and if need be hair washing and to assistance if need be.
- If you have a problem with a staff member you have
the right to talk with their supervisor.
Just because you are a patient does not mean you are to be
treated as if you cannot think or act for yourself. Staff should treat you with
dignity and respect. They should answer your questions and resolve any issues
that you have within the best of their ability. Just remember that you are in
charge of your health care.
Your Responsibilities as a Patient:
- Be polite and cordial. Ask questions, don't
accuse.
- Be honest and answer all questions your doctor/nurse
have
- Inform your doctor/nurse of all medications you are on
and what tests you have had done.
- Inform your doctor/nurse of any allergies.
- Be prepared to research what you are told by the
doctor/nurse including medications and treatments. Do not just take
their word on such things.
