Religious Tolerance

I live in the United States which is supposed to be the "land of the free," where freedom of religion is supposed to be accepted and allowed. Under the Constitution we are supposed to have freedom of religion.  That we are allowed to believe what we want and to practice those beliefs.  Far too often though these are just words spouted but not followed.

I  have seen many  times people wanting their own beliefs to be respected and yet they won't do the same for others.

How often have we had people knock on our door trying to push their religion upon us or if we state, even among friends, that we believe something different a heated discussion ensues?

I particularly see this type of disrespect around the month of December.  This month has many religious holidays present, Christmas, Hanukah, Solstice, and Kwanza.  There may be others but these I know for certain.  I have heard and seen many people express that only their holiday should be respected, honored, or commented on. They will demand that their holiday be "the Holiday" and any others should not be allowed.  They demand in one breath the freedom to practice their beliefs and in the next refuse to allow others that same right.

I am not encouraging one religion over another but the belief that everyone has the right to follow their own path so long as it does not hurt another. I would like to encourage everyone to find out more about the different paths that are out there for only with knowledge can we truly understand.
I want to see more tolerance in the world when it comes to religion. Tolerance does not mean that you have to believe in that religion or that you have to agree with it. All that it means is that you will allow others to live their lives and not harass, persecute or condemn them. It means to live and let live.

Many things in the United States have "In God We Trust" on them.  The word "God" means "a being or object believed to have more than natural attributes and powers and to require human worship".  No where does the word God in that sentence refer to a particular deity.  It does not say  "In Jesus We Trust" nor does it state "In Allah", "In Jehovah" or even "In Brigid".  It allows us as individuals to decide which God we want to trust in. These words and those who placed them on our coins wanted to treat us as adults, ones who are capable of deciding for ourselves which is best for us, should we not respect them by doing the same with others?
