The Three R's:  Recycle, Reduce and Reuse

Many of us have heard these terms, for some of us all our lives, but hearing of them and using them aren't always done. Reuse, Reduce and Recycle, the three "R's" that should be part of our lives.

We hear the words or see commercials on how we need to conserve our resources.  It is sometimes easier said then done.  Finding the space to recycle, let alone lugging things down to the recycling place or having to remember which days are for  "Blue Bags" , etc. can be inconvenient at best and at worst a royal pain.  However if society as a whole doesn't start to use the three "R's" this world is going to be in serious danger.

So what can you do to help?  There are many ways in which to do so that really won't interfere in your life.  Even small changes can make a big difference.  From turning lights off when a room isn't in use, walking to buy the newspaper on the corner instead of driving,  using rags instead of paper towels, little things that add up over time.

Below are some different ways to reuse many things that we might have around the house that aren't needed anymore for their original purpose.  There are also some useful links to find other information in order to aid you in practicing the three "R's".

  • Use plastic grocery bags in bathroom, bedroom, or office garbage cans instead of buying the smaller garbage bags for them.
  • Coffee Cans.  These can be great to use for storage for rice, cereal, flour, etc.
  • Still have a ton of coffee cans?  Fill it up with water and place it in your freezer.  They are  great for putting in your cooler or in an emergency great for keeping the fridge cool.
  • Baby food jars are a great storage container for screws, bolts, and other hardware. Also great for Barbie shoes, purses and other little toys that are easily lost.
  • Plastic butter tubs are great for storage of food and other items.
  • Use the comics from the Sunday paper for wrapping paper.
  • Take newspaper and roll it up into a tight log and tie with twine.  They are great in a fireplace to supplement wood.
  • Coffee grounds...what good are those after they are wet?  Well take the coffee grounds and put them in a can, add in egg shells from whenever you have eggs and use this as a fertilizer for house hold plants (can be used without egg shells as well).
  • Hamster/Bunny/Guinea Pig/Ferret bedding.  The wood shaving type can be reused as a mulch/fertilizer for outside plants.
