Over the years there have been many wars fought. To look
back and say that some were unjust or unneeded is easy to do. To learn from them
though and to not repeat those same mistakes is far harder.
We are each allowed our own opinion
about any subject. My own on War varies. There are times I agree it is
necessary. Freedom and justice are not something we are just given, sometimes
they have to be fought for in order to have them within our lives. They are not
just words to be bandied about but ideals that should be cherished and honored.
Once they are taken for granted it is far too easy to lose them.
Peace is a house we all wish to live
under but peace without freedom and justice is not living. It's existing and
there is a big difference. However to disturb that peace over things such as
money or religion is foolish and petty. We, as a race, should be able to live
without forcing another to our beliefs or the need to steal lives for money.
Peace on earth is the greatest treasure we could ever
hope to have. It is not something we can just wish for. It takes effort from
everyone and an acceptance of each person's right to individual choices and
beliefs. We should strive to find common ground to meet upon and work out our
differences. Still when push comes to shove and once backed into a corner what
choice does anyone have?
As to the current situation in the Middle East and the
involvement of the United States I will state openly that I support our troops
and our involvement. Whether or not there were weapons of mass destruction
Hussein had to be stopped. He was eventually convicted by his own people
for war crimes, that should tell us something. As humans if we saw someone
beating up someone in the street would we not at bare minimum call the police to
help them? If not interfere directly? How then could we not as a nation
not help out the citizens over there who were being far worse then beaten?
As to the situation after Hussein was
stopped we need to make sure that when our troops leave there they won't have to
go back any time soon. Growing up I saw trouble come in many forms to our
country and others due to the Middle East: the Munich Olympics, the
Iranian Hostages, planes taken over by terrorists, the bombing of the World
Trade Center and eventually 911. I do believe we have to finish what we
started otherwise we will just be leaving a nest of vipers that will strike us
once again when we least expect it.
The issue of war and peace have been
debated many times and has been expressed by citizens of this country in many
ways. One such way is with music. Our musicians have written songs
over the ages to show not only their patriotism but to show their beliefs on war
and peace and how such things effect us. One of my favorite songs on this
subject is "One Tin Soldier Rides Away" (aka :The Legend of Billy Jack") by
Coven. If you have never heard this song you can listen to it by clicking
on the link below. The lyrics to this song should be a message to all of
us. That war shouldn't be about riches or religion. That we need to
learn to live with one another and respect each other.
One Tin Solder
Rides Away
Lyrics:
Listen, children, to a story
That was written long ago,
'Bout a kingdom on a mountain
And the valley-folk below.
On the mountain was a treasure
Buried deep beneath the stone,
And the valley-people swore
They'd have it for their very own.
Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgment day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.
So the people of the valley
Sent a message up the hill,
Asking for the buried treasure,
Tons of gold for which they'd kill.
Came an answer from the kingdom,
"With our brothers we will share
All the secrets of our mountain,
All the riches buried there."
Now the valley cried with anger,
"Mount your horses! Draw your sword!"
And they killed the mountain-people,
So they won their just reward.
Now they stood beside the treasure,
On the mountain, dark and red.
Turned the stone and looked beneath it...
"Peace on Earth" was all it said.
Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgment day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.
Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgment day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.
